HHS tennis wins opener

CIMARRON --  The Hays High School girls' tennis team opened its season on Thursday by winning a five-team meet hosted by Cimarron High School, with both its singles players finishing in first place.

Junior Brooke Forinash, the Indians' lone returning state qualifier, won all four of her matches convincingly (6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1) to take first in the No. 1 singles flight. Senior Emily McPherson took first as the team's No. 2 singles player, also winning all four of her matches (6-3, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3).

Hays High's No. 1 doubles team of juniors Fabi Pyschny and Sylina Zhang took second place, their lone loss a 6-3 defeat in their second match to Bailey Harris and Morgan Woelk of Greeley County/Tribune.

The Indians' No. 2 doubles team of freshman Sarah Wyse and sophomore Sierra Brown also took second, winning their first three matches before a 6-0 loss to the Ulysses duo of Delaney Graber and Estefani Acosta in the finals.

As a team Hays High finished with 21 points to win the meet. The Indians were followed by Greeley County's 18 points, St. John's 10, Ulysses' 9 and Cimarron's 2.

Next for Hays High is its lone home meet of the season, to be held 3 p.m. Thursday.
