By The Hays Daily News
The Hays Larks evened the series Saturday night.
After falling Friday in 10 innings to the El Dorado Broncos, the Larks grabbed a 6-4 win Saturday in front of a large crowd on hand for Larkstoberfest/Old-Timers’ Night at Larks Park.
Hays (13-9 overall, 9-9 Jayhawk League) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, helped by a five-run second inning, then held on for the victory. Nick Goza picked up the win in six innings pitched. He gave up three runs (all earned) on six hits with four strikeouts to one walk. D.J. Carr pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.
El Dorado (9-11, 6-11) scored a run in the sixth, then rallied with three runs combined in the seventh and eight before Carr closed the door.
In Hays’ five-run second inning, Ty Detmer, Derrick Mount, Michael Burns and Cooper Langley each drove in runs with base hits, while Evan Gruener flew lined out to center field to drive in a run as the Larks batted around.
Aaron Cornell finished 3 for 5 for Hays in the leadoff spot and scored twice. He had the only multi-hit/multi-run game for Hays. The two teams are slated to wrap up the series at 7 p.m. Sunday, part of Military Appreciation Night at Larks Park.
