Larks roll to 19-3
By NICK McQUEEN
Midway through the fourth inning, it was apparent the Boulder Collegians weren't going to slow down the Hays Larks.
The Larks had just scored their 11th run on a bases-loaded walk, but were just a little more than halfway done.
Hays posted 19 runs through seven innings on 17 hits, including three home runs, and rolled to a 19-0 victory in seven innings Thursday night at Larks Park.
Hays now is 19-3 heading into this weekend's key three-game series with the Wellington Heat at Larks Park.
Mackenzie Handel finished 2 for 5 with two runs scored, a two-run home run, and an RBI double. He also drove in a run in sixth on a groundout. Desmond Roberts also had a two-run home run in the Larks' four-run second inning. Two batters later, Brent Gillespie
matched the feat to give Hays a 4-0 lead.
The Larks scored four runs in the third, then seven in the fifth to take a 15-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Boulder announced they were done, and the game was called after the Collegians batted in the seventh.
Logan DeRosier (1-0) picked up the win for Hays in four innings. He gave up no runs on one hit and Hays had one error. Nick Goza pitched the final two innings.
Hays, 13-3 atop the Jayhawk League hosts Wellington at 7 p.m. Saturday, part of Larkstoberfest and Old-Timers' night. Former Larks are invited back to attend and there will be bierocks and other food specials all night.
