Summer begins for Hays Monarchs

The Hays Monarchs Senior Legion baseball team opened its summer schedule with a 9-0, 9-1 sweep of visiting Lincoln on Wednesday at TMP Field.
Kameron Schmidt earned the win in Game 1, allowing three hits in three innings with three strikeouts. Braiden Werth got the save in three innings of work, also giving up three hits with one strikeout.
The Monarchs scored one run in the first inning, and an RBI single by Werth to score Cameron Brin. They added two more in the second inning, the first a sac-fly by Liam Stults to score Justin Pfeifer, the second a RBI-single by Brin to score Schmidt.
Ryan Ruder made it 4-0 after scoring on an error in the fourth inning, a score the Monarchs took into the sixth inning. Then Hays exploded with five more runs that inning to earn the run-rule win.
Werth and Brin each went 3 for 4 with two RBI to lead Hays. Ryan Schippers also had two RBIs, both coming in the final at-bat of the game. The Monarchs outhit Lincoln 12-6.
Hays got off to a quick start in Game 2 as well, scoring two runs in the first inning, both coming when Jordan Gottschalk singled to score Grant Romme and Werth.
Lincoln got its only run of the doubleheader in the top of the third inning, a sacrifice groundout to third base by Dayton Walter that scored Tevin Rice. Hays got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when Gottschalk scored on an error by Rice from right field.
The Monarchs put the game away in the fourth inning with its final six runs. The first run came on a wild pitch, allowing Romme to score from third with the bases loaded. Pfeifer singled two batters later to score Werth and Schippers to make it 6-1.
Hays continued to pile it on from there. The inning's fourth run came from Gottschalk after Ryan Ruder was walked with the bases loaded, the fifth run coming at the next at-bat when Stults was walked.
The game's final run came when Jared Vitztum score on a sac-fly from Brin. The game ended via run-rule after Lincoln went down in order in the top of the fifth inning.
Stults took the win for Hays, giving up three hits and one earned run in three innings with two strikeouts. Vitztum earned the save while not allowing a hit in two innings of work.
Gottschalk and Pfeifer led the offense, each going 2 for 2 with two RBI.
The Monarchs, made primarily of Thomas More Prep-Marian players, will return to the diamond on Monday with a road doubleheader against the Hays Eagles, mostly Hays High School athletes. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 6 p.m.
