Monarchs sweep Great Bend

GREAT BEND -- The Hays Monarchs Legion baseball team worked extra innings for a win in Game 1, then picked up a road sweep against Great Bend on Thursday evening.
The sweep moves the Monarchs to 16-5.
In Game 1, the Monarchs scored six runs in the ninth inning for a 15-9 extra-inning shootout. That came after Great Bend scored five runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, and one in the seventh to tie the game. The Monarchs won 7-3 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Hays had a 6-0 lead after three innings before Great Bend scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth. But, the Monarchs led 9-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Jordan Gottschalk had five hits, including two doubles, while Kameron Schmidt finished 3 for 5, and drove in three runs.
Ryan Schippers, Braiden Werth and Ricky Hockett each drove in a pair of runs as well. Liam Stults picked up the win in four innings of relief of starter Kameron Schmidt. Schmidt pitched five innings. He gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Stults (5-1) gave up four runs (all earned) on five hits in four innings. He struck out six and walked three.
In Game 2, Hays capitalized on six Great Bend errors, coming back from a 3-2 deficit for the win. The Monarchs took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning, then pulled away with two more runs in the seventh.
Grant Romme and Gottschalk each had two hits. Schippers had one double. Hockett (4-0) picked up the win in three innings of relief of Werth. Hockett held Great Bend scoreless with three hits and a walk. Werth struck out four and walked eight in four innings.
Hays is off until Wednesday when it travels to Larned for a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
