TMP softball wins regional opener

ELLSWORTH -- The Thomas More Prep-Marian softball team earned a wild win over Plainville/Natoma (10-10) on Monday in their Class 3A regional quarterfinal game, played in Ellsworth.
TMP (8-13) defeated the fourth-seeded Cardinals 15-12 to advance to today's regional semifinals, where the fifth-seeded Monarchs will play top seed Beloit High School (16-4) at 3 p.m. The winner between TMP-Beloit will play either two-seed Ellsworth (14-5) or three-seed Minneapolis (15-6) in the regional championship game around 6:30 p.m.
Monday's game between TMP and Plainville saw a combined 13 errors and 25 hits.
TMP scored four runs in the top of the first inning, only to have Plainville answer with three in the bottom half. The Monarchs led 8-4 midway through the fourth inning but saw the Cardinals score four runs of its own to tie the game at 8 after four innings.
TMP earned the separation it needed with a six-run fifth inning and held off Plainville the rest of the way. Freshman Alison Helget pitched all seven innings for the Monarchs, finishing with four strikeouts.
