The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys' basketball team tried to pull away from Class 4A Colby time and time again on Friday in the consolation bracket of the 31st annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout.

Each time the Monarchs gained any separation, the Eagles rallied back. Even after TMP had built a 26-point lead midway through the third quarter.

"It was a rollercoaster night. We had spurts where we were just dominating, but we had just as long of segments of just plain bad, too," TMP coach Joe Hertel said. "As we move further into the season, we have to clean that up. It was kind of rough and dirty and ugly. But we'll take it."

TMP (1-1) held on to defeat Colby (0-2) 72-51, advancing the Monarchs to today's fourth-place game at 3:15 p.m. in the Hays Middle School gym.

The win comes off a 59-53 loss to Class 6A Garden City in the first round on Thursday.

"In some ways I think the first victory of the season is always the hardest to get, "Hertel said. "Although we lost (Thursday) night, we played considerably better basketball, both individually and as a team. I didn't think we were sharp tonight but we managed to stave them off at the end when they made that run."

TMP led Colby 52-26 midway through the third quarter after scoring the first 14 points of the second half and took a 54-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

But a wild rally by Colby made it a game. The comeback wasn't sudden and wasn't pretty for either team, but the Eagles slowly chipped away at the lead and found themselves down by only seven points at 58-51 with 2:14 to play.

A TMP timeout was followed by one final run for the Monarchs, who didn't allow a single Eagle point over the remainder of the game while scoring the final 14 points to pull away for the 21-point win.

"This group of kids has got to learn to play with a lead and maintain the proper mindset so that those kinds of comebacks don't happen," Hertel said. "If we only have a 10-point lead tonight, who knows how it would have ended up? I think that's part of the maturation process and hopefully we will remember you just can't let your guard down."

TMP opened the game with an 11-0 lead before Colby cut it to six points at 15-9. A short run gave TMP a 10-point lead at 21-11 before the Eagles got four quick points to cut it to 21-15 after a quarter.

The Monarchs' halftime lead reached 12 points at 38-26, but only after Colby had cut it to five on a couple of occasions.

TMP was led by junior Max Megaffin's 17 points, 13 of which came in the first quarter on three made 3-pointers in the opening minutes. Kameron Schmidt (9 of 13 from the free-throw line) and Ryan Mayorga each finished with 13 points.

Junior Cameron Fouts was the final Monarch in double digits with 11 points.

Cameron Brown led Colby with 17 points. Brown was 3 of 14 from the free-throw line, and Colby was 11 of 28 from the foul line as a team. TMP was 21 of 35.

The Eagles held off a pesky TMP squad in overtime to advance to Saturday's fourth-place game against DeSoto. After losing by 46 to Garden City on Thursday, TMP did a complete 180 and actually led Colby 21-13 at halftime. Colby outscored TMP 16-11 in the fourth quarter to force overtime before getting the win. Sophomore Melissa Pfeifer led TMP with 16 points, including four made 3-pointers. Haileigh Shull finished with a game-high 20 points for Colby, while Brenly Terrell had 11.
