A 5-4 loss to Wayne State College ended the Fort Hays State University softball team’s play in Missouri Western Hy-Vee Classic on Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo. The Tigers lost their first game of day 11-3 to Winona State.
Fort Hays (9-17) went 1-4 in the three day tournament.
Against Winona State, the Tigers fell behind 4-0 through four innings, before scoring three runs in the fifth. Senior Kylie Strand scored the first run on an error, then junior Collette West hit a two-run single.
West finished the game 2-of-3 at the plate, which included a double. Freshman catcher Tess Gray also had two hits.
Junior Carrie Clarke, 4-3, took the loss for Fort Hays. She gave up 11 runs on 12 hits, four walks and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings or work.
In the second game, the Tigers responded to Wayne State’s one run in the top of the first inning with three in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Bailey Kennedy scored Fort Hay’s first run unearned after a West single. Junior Candace Bollig followed with a two-run double. The Tigers final run came in the fourth inning on a double by Kennedy scoring Strand.
Wayne State scored two runs in the fourth inning, then added two more in the sixth for the win.
Freshman Hailey Chapman took the loss. She worked six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks. She struck out three.
Fort Hays had 13 hits paced by three from Kennedy. Bollig had two hits and two RBIs.
The Tigers travel to Metropolitan State in Denver for a doubleheaders Tuesday.
