BUHLER — The Hays High School boys’ track and field team will send two individuals and a relay to the Class 4A state finale next week at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium.
Senior thrower Shane Berens did as he has all season and won the discus and shot put at Friday’s regional in Buhler. Berens threw 53 feet, 7 inches to claim the shot put regional crown, then 151-9 to claim the crown in the discus.
Berens will be joined by senior Zachary Hopp, who qualified with his fourth-place showing in the 3,200-meter run. Hopp finished in 10 minutes, 22.63 seconds — 17 seconds back of the winner from Scott City, and two seconds ahead of fifth place.
The Indians’ 3,200-meter relay team also qualified after it finished in fourth place. The team of freshman Taivian Creamer, senior Ethan Shippy, Hopp and senior Caden Cunningham was third in 8:24.75.
The Indian boys collected an additional two medals, with Connor Winter fifth in the shot put (487-7.75) and Conner Staab sixth in the discus (146-0).
The Indian girls will send three individuals to the finale. Sophomore Jaycee Dale tied for third to qualify in the high jump. The sophomore cleared 4-10, while the winning jump of 5-1 came from Larned.
Also returning to state is senior Marie Reveles. Reveles qualified third in the 1,600-meter run in 5:30.32, and just missed qualifying in the 800, finishing fifth in 2:35.13.
The final qualifier was junior Macey Steckel, who claimed the bronze medal in the discus, throwing 103-6.
The Indian girls collected a total of seven regional medals.
Colby will send three individuals to state on the boys’ side, headlined by sophomore sprinter Jordan Schippers. Schippers ran third in the 100-meter dash at 11.36, and was second in the 200 at 22.92.
The Eagles qualified their 400-meter relay fourth in 51.39.
