Roger Schieferecke left Fort Hays State University for better positions twice.
He said he always looked forward to coming back and got that opportunity in 2010 when the university created an associate director's position for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science.
"I had never left western Kansas," said Schieferecke, who was born and raised in Norton. "Sometimes you don't realize what you have until you leave."
Schieferecke, who has bachelor's and master's degrees in communication from FHSU and has worked in admissions twice at his alma mater, received his doctorate degree in adult and higher education from the University of South Dakota in December 2009 and was looking for a job when he heard of the new position at KAMS.
"When the opportunity arose to come back for a third time," he said, "I jumped all over it."
