RUSSELL -- Whip out that favorite cooking apron and dust off that secret barbecue recipe. It's time for the third annual Bricks, Broncs and BBQ.

The two-day event will kick off Oct. 5 and include a variety of activities.

From noon to 5 p.m., the "Chrome, Smoke & Flames" exhibit will be on display at Deines Cultural Center.

For that evening's entertainment, the Blades will give a free concert from 8 to 11 p.m. near Cecil Bricker Park.

Saturday will feature two barbecues.

One is the Bricks, Broncs and BBQ Kansas City Barbeque Society event. The barbecue event is a sanctioned KCBS event.

Linda O'Neal, executive director of Russell Main Street, said while there is no deadline to enter the KCBS event, it is preferred contestants enter before the day of the event. It costs $175 to enter the event.

The judging begins at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.

The second barbecue event is the Russell Main Street Tailgate barbecue contest.

O'Neal said everyone is welcome to register; the cost to enter is $25.

She also added for $5, visitors can sample barbecue and cast their vote in the people's choice contest for their favorite at the Russell Main Street Tailgate barbecue. O'Neal said there are only 100 tickets available.

The barbecue sampling will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday also will include an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.

Contestants will vie for $4,500 in cash and prizes, with the grand champion earning $1,500.

O'Neal also added there are four other categories that places first through fifth will be awarded. Each winner will receive prize money.

The Russell Main Street Tailgate contest will have three categories. The best-judged meat winner will receive a Lil' Texas Traeger grill. The winner of the people's choice will win $100 in Main Street Bucks, while the best tailgating decoration winner will receive $25 in Main Street Bucks.

In addition to the awards ceremony, there will be a drawing for an iPad3 and accessories. Tickets for the drawing can be purchased in advance at several Russell businesses or at the event. The cost is $5 per ticket or $20 for five tickets. Only 500 tickets will be sold, and the winner does not need to be present at the event.
