The mystery is solved.
K's Diner is opening next month in the former Village Inn building.
There's been much speculation recently about the activity at the former chain restaurant location.
Sisters Kim Leiker and Kari Geerdes are co-owners of the home style diner.
"They told us to keep it short and sweet, and everybody will remember better," Geerdes said of the name.
Neither of them has any restaurant experience, but they are taking some training, and Kim has business experience.
It's just something Leiker has wanted to do.
"I'd always wanted to bring in one of those modular '50s diners," Leiker said.
While she was here visiting her daughter, a student at Fort Hays State University, she decided to check with a real estate agent about buying some land along Vine Street.
They mentioned the former Village Inn building was vacant.
"It just started rolling from there," she said. "It went quickly. It didn't take much to get in.SDRq
The booths, tables and chairs were left in the building. Since they were in good condition, the women are keeping them and working with that color to create a homey comfortable decor.
"Most of our set aside money went for updating the kitchen area," Geerdes said. "We focused on the back-end; it needed the most work."
Sept. 7 has been set as the opening date.
"We wanted to make sure everything was running perfect, so we didn't have to worry about it," Leiker said.
The diner's hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
"The first thing everybody asks us (is) are you serving breakfast," Kim said. "The coffee drinkers are waiting."
Menu items likely will include hamburgers, homemade onion rings and french fries, chicken-fried steak, meatloaf and desserts, along with daily specials.
They expect to hire approximately 25 full- and part-time employees.
