Issue of hunger on group's plate

The Hunger Awareness Banquet on Sept. 9 was the second fundraising effort of the Global Leadership Project to raise money for the upcoming SWIPE Out Hunger event.
The GLP, a part of Fort Hays State University's Center for Civic Leadership, is raising money for the second annual SWIPE Out Hunger Food event Oct. 13. The event is from noon to 3 p.m. and in FHSU's Forsyth Library.
SWIPE Out Hunger, which stands for statewide packaging event, is a Numana Inc. food-packaging event.
Numana is a nonprofit organization based in El Dorado that focuses on international hunger relief.
The first SWIPE Out Hunger event was Oct. 29, 2011.
Kelly Nuckolls, student coordinator for the Global Leadership Project and American Democracy Project, said Numana gave a number of higher educations the opportunity to package 20,000 meals. Nuckolls said the first packaging event was free and did not require any fundraising, but it mainly was used to introduce the process to the college and community.
"We had about 160 volunteers and had to turn some students away because that was as many we could have for that size of an event," she said of last year's event.
Nuckolls said this year's goal is to raise $23,000 to package 100,000 meals. Each meal costs 23 cents, and the money raised at the banquets were put toward the goal.
The second banquet, at Messiah Lutheran Church, raised $3,079.
"We asked for a $5 minimum donation at the door, and we had silent auctions at both to help raise funds," Nuckolls said.
This was the second banquet the GLP has organized. The first banquet, which was in March, raised $2,580.
Nuckolls said $18,064.25 had been raised through sponsorship, grants and donations from local businesses and organizations. With 100,000 meals to package, she said volunteers are welcome.
"The manpower that is needed for a food packaging event for this size is 450 volunteers if they just package for an hour," Nuckolls said.
Like last year, the meals will be sent to a refugee camp in the Horn of Africa.
