The annual Rock, Roll, Ride Rod Run car show in Hays is a great reminder of "what we all threw away" for organizer Darrell Unrein.
The owner of Toys 4 Trux in Hays has helped with the show since it began 10 years ago, and each year, there is a different combination of classic cars and trucks -- the kind so many high-schoolers drove, wrecked and discarded. But the ones that have been restored that participate in the show each year are the reason he enjoys the show so much.
"It's just awesome to see what was made back then and how they're running today," Unrein said.
The Rock, Roll, Ride Rod Run will be Saturday at Lewis Ford, 4450 Vine. The dealership has played host to the event since it began, first as a celebration of the new Ford store 10 years ago, then as a car show for the community.
"Almost every old make and model has been at this show," said Ross Harms, general manager of Lewis Ford.
The dealership clears out for the show each year, allowing participants and show-goers to use the air-conditioned building throughout the day. And at the end of the day, the garage becomes the show arena for a parade of vehicles named the "best" of the show.
"A lot of our techs and service guys have cars of their own," Harms said. "It's a good day for them to bring them out and see what else comes in."
Rock, Roll, Ride Rod Run consistently has drawn more than 100 cars in recent years, and Unrein said 80 percent of them usually come from out of town. A cruise night Friday sometimes can draw nearly 100 cars, but sometimes are different from those entering the car show.
The cruise night is from 7 to 10 p.m. in the KFC and Advance Auto Parts parking lot at 2804 Vine. Dash plaques and a poker run will be part of the night.
Then Saturday, registration for the car show is from 9 to 11 a.m., with the show open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration fee is $25 and includes a barbecue lunch. Awards are given out at 4 p.m.
