In conjunction with Oktoberfest festivities, Ellis County Historical Society will host "Honoring Our Heritage," which will include a family-friendly program of historical interpreters, traditional work demonstrations, folk music and local cuisine favorites. Food booths and activities will be ongoing throughout the day in Municipal Park, located just north of the dike in Frontier Park.

We invite you and your family to come and participate in "Honoring Our Heritage." Your family will be entertained and well-fed as you  learn more about Ellis County history, Volga-German pioneers and the culture that made them successful in Kansas. Our goal is to build this festival, with your help, so it will grow and  thrive as a "must-attend" event in our community and beyond the borders of Kansas.

Volga-German heritage, which was established in the 1870s, runs deep in Ellis and Rush counties.  So deep, in fact, the surrounding towns and villages in the area have many traditions and artifacts that are important in the lives of descendants who continue to live here more than 130 years later. The Ellis County Historical Society takes pride in preserving and displaying this unique culture for the enrichment of future generations.

As a nonprofit organization, ECHS has an extensive archival collection for research on the immigrant families that settled here and made it their new "homeland." Volga-German specific exhibits inside the ECHS Museum are also a wonderful way to explore the legacy of these hard-working and religious people. The collection chronicles their journey from Russia across the Atlantic and details their hardships and great accomplishments such as erecting stone churches as seen at Victoria's Cathedral of the Plains.

Visitors can learn about the Volga-German food customs and folk music that is kept alive in the collection of pictures and artifacts displayed inside the museum and in the replica "Volga German Haus" located on the museum grounds.

ECHS relies on the time and talent of wonderful volunteers. For more information on helping with the event or other ECHS work that preserves our culture and history, contact ECHS at (785) 628-2624 or email visitors@elliscountyhistoricalsociety.org.
