The Hays Police Department is investigating the report of a motorist who offered a 10-year-old girl a ride.
But they're not sure if he's someone they should worry about or if he was a good samaritan simply offering someone a ride.
Police received the report of an offer of a ride Tuesday, a day after the incident apparently happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday in the 2000 block of Fort Street.
"The girl ran off and was unharmed," a police department statement said.
Hays Assistant Police Chief Brian Dawson said they've not yet received any calls about the incident but would like to hear from anyone who might have seen the vehicle, reportedly pulling a trailer at the time the driver offered the girl a ride.
Or, they'd like to hear from the driver.
Dawson said it's possible the driver simply might have been offering the girl a ride.
"I think she did the right thing," he said of her not getting in the truck with someone she didn't know. "It's hard to tell if it was a scary thing or if he was just offering a ride. Either way, she didn't get in the truck, which is a good thing."
Dawson said it's important with school back in session to remind students not to get in a vehicle with someone they don't know.
Anyone with informaiton about the pickup truck or the driver can call Detective Dave Bunger at (785) 625-1030.
