It was a challenge for Roy Schmeidler's mom to find a piano teacher who would take on a student so young when her son was in kindergarten in 2001-02.
It was just about as difficult for Kathy Dreiling Amrein to talk Schmeidler into going out for TMP Singers his first two years at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
Liz Schmeidler eventually did find a piano instructor for her son, who went on to became adept at playing not only the piano but several other musical instruments.
Amrein's persistence paid off.
Roy Schmeidler, now a junior at TMP, decided to try vocal music for the first time and is a vital member of his school's select vocal and performance group.
Anyone attending next month's dinner show, "Rockin' Out to Country" will be treated to Schmeidler on the piano and singing simultaneously as he performs Billy Joel's "Piano Man." Tickets are on sale now for the Feb. 9, 10 and 17 shows and can be purchased by calling the school at (785) 625-6577.
"I had never really sang before, but (Amrein) always asked me to be in (TMP Singers)," said Schmeidler, who also specializes in the violin and trombone and also can play the guitar and drums. "She said she thought I would be an asset to the group, but I was never that interested in it."
Urging from fellow students made Schmeidler decide to give vocal -- and the TMP Singers -- a try this year, and he's glad he did.
"I love it," he said. "Even when the practices are long, it's really fun."
In addition to singing several numbers as a group, each of the 22 singers also pick a solo to perform during the show.
"I thought it would be cool to incorporate my different instruments," Schmeidler said. "Piano is my favorite, so I thought if I could play something and sing at the same time ... what better song to do than 'Piano Man.' "
Amrein said Schmeidler's addition to the group this year is "a great asset."
"Not only is he a leader, but he's got a lot of talent," she said.
This will be special year for Amrein, whose youngest daughter, Hannah Dreiling, is in her fourth and final year with the group.
More than a third of the group is from the class of 2013, including seniors Ross Werth and Adam Urban, who have been in charge of lights all four years of the dinner show, as well as other performances. Completing the lights crew is junior Levi Dreiling.
