The Hays Daily News is the daily newspaper serving Hays, Ellis County and a surrounding 14-county area in northwest Kansas. Published afternoons Monday through Friday and Sunday mornings, 12,500-circulation Hays Daily News is an award-winning, progressive newspaper.

Frank Motz founded the newspaper as the first daily in Hays on Armistice Day, November 11, 1929. His fledgling newspaper survived the Great Depression and emerged to become one of the best dailies in the state. In recent years, the newspaper has earned national and state awards in photography, writing and design.

The Hays Daily News today is majority-owned by Hutchinson, Kan.-based Harris Enterprises, which owns seven newspapers in Kansas and one in Iowa.

The newspaper's own Web site debuted at dailynews.net in 1996. The newspaper Web site since has evolved, and now HDNews.net also features a Hays community portal and a northwest Kansas online resource.
