HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) -- A 14-year-old Hutchinson boy has been taken into custody in connection with a house fire that killed his mother and sister.
The boy has not been charged, but police say he's suspected of deliberately setting the fire, which was reported early Thursday.
The mother and daughter were found dead together in a bedroom, according to fire officials. The girl died shortly after the fire, and her mother died later Thursday. The boy and his father were unharmed.
Hutchinson Fire Chief Kim Forbes said when firefighters arrived at the scene early Thursday the fire was fully involved.
Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder said investigators determined an accelerant was poured in several rooms on the first floor of the house and intentionally ignited. Schroeder's office said it will file a formal juvenile offender petition in juvenile court.
The investigative team includes the Office of the State Fire Marshal, investigators with the Department of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and the Hutchinson Police Department.
Forbes said they assembled a bigger team because the fire involved a fatality.
"They are experts in the field, and they begin looking at accidental causes for the fire from lamps and wiring," Forbes said.
