HOLTON, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it is investigating the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, but will not say what prompted the investigation.

John Wiley Kerr, associate director of the KBI, told The Topeka Capital-Journal that the bureau started an investigation Monday night.

Kerr refused to discuss the nature of the investigation, or say how many people were involved.

Sheriff Charles Cornell took office in 2004 and was re-elected in 2008.

Kerr says the KBI receives allegations involving law enforcement departments across the state, and not all investigations result in charges.
