KDOT encouraging people to stay off Turnpike

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas transportation authorities say people in much of the state should just stay home.
A snowstorm has blanketed most of the state by early Thursday, prompting the Kansas Turnpike Authority to encourage people to stay off the turnpike on the entire route from Oklahoma to Kansas City.
Early Thursday, the turnpike authority reported zero visibility from the Oklahoma border to Wichita. Streets and highways in the Wichita area are snowpacked, with heavy snow falling.
The Kansas Department of Transportation's website shows major roads in most of the state snowpacked and icy, including Interstate 70. The exception is in northeast Kansas but the snow is expected to move into that region, with up to 14 inches possible.
KAKE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/Yd8aT4 ) Reno County is reporting whiteout conditions around Hutchinson.
