KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- The University of Kansas Hospital has transplanted its 1,000th liver -- followed soon after by the 1,001st transplant.

The hospital announced Wednesday the recipient of the 1,000th transplant was 60-year-old Brenda Higgins of Kansas City. Thirty-nine-year-old Deborah Ellerbusch of Newton received the 1,001st liver.

The hospital's liver transplant program started in 1990.

Hospital officials say the program is among the 25 largest in the nation.
