TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Republican leaders of the Kansas House have put a proposal to increase taxes on the debate calendar.
The item on Tuesday's agenda is aimed at closing a projected gap of $467 million between expected revenue collections and mandated expenditures in the 2011 Kansas budget.
House Majority Leader Ray Merrick, a Stilwell Republican, says Democrats have been seeking tax increases throughout the 2010 session.
But Merrick believes raising taxes will kill the state's prospects for coming out of the recession.
Among proposals likely to be considered Democratic Gov. Mark Parkinson' plan to raise the 5.3 percent sales tax to 6.3 percent for three years.
