Maneuvering around and through the intersection of Walnut and First Avenue is going to be a little more complicated for the next few weeks.
Downtown Development Director Jim Seitnater said that, weather permitting, workers will begin hoisting large pre-cast concrete pieces of the new Wiley Plaza parking garage into place today.
A crane will be brought in to lift the concrete pieces from a steady stream of large trucks.
To give the crane and trucks room to park and to provide a safety buffer, traffic will be redirected as follows:
--Southbound traffic on Walnut will have to turn east or west on Second Avenue;
--Northbound traffic on Walnut will have to turn east at First Avenue;
--Westbound traffic on First will still have access to the post office and other businesses in the 100 block of East First but will have to make a U-turn at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at First and Walnut and go back to the east;
--Eastbound traffic on First will still be able to continue east through the First and Walnut intersection or turn south on Walnut, but traffic will not be able to go north on Walnut.
Seitnater said the lane closures and redirection will remain in place until the construction of the garage is completed, which he said should be around July 11.
Seitnater also said that the angle parking in the center of First Avenue in front of Wiley Plaza will be closed off during the garage construction.
