WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating a report that a Sedgwick County resident stole about $900 worth of electricity over a nearly one-year period by tampering with a meter.

KAKE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1d6EQpD ) that Westar Energy alerted the sheriff's office to the theft.

Deputies went to a residence and found that someone had drilled a hole in the meter and inserted a wire to keep it from running. No arrests have been made so far.

The sheriff's office had said earlier Wednesday that the scheme began at least seven years ago and involved about $8,000 worth of electricity, but Westar later clarified the numbers to KAKE.
