Funds awarded to expand Leavenworth cemetery

Eds: APNewsNow.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) -- The federal government has awarded a $10 million contract to expand the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced Thursday that the contract from the Department of Veterans Affairs was awarded to Zieson Construction Co., LLC of Topeka.

The contract is scheduled to be completed by early 2011.

The announcement says the expansion will occur on 36 acres of excess property belonging to the Leavenworth VA Medical Center. The new area will provide about 14,000 additional gravesites at the 123-year-old cemetery.
