Animal disease lab headed to Kansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Sen. Sam Brownback says a federal animal research program headed to Kansas will attract private businesses seeking to take advantage of that research.
Brownback, state and local officials on Monday announced that the Department of Agriculture's Arthropod-Borne Animal Disease Research Laboratory is moving to Manhattan.
The laboratory has been in Laramie, Wyo., since 1985.
The lab studies animal disease spread by insects and arachnids, such as mosquitoes and ticks.
Brownback says companies that can turn that research into products for farmers and ranchers will likely flock to the area.
The lab will bring about 30 jobs and is expected to open by next August.
Manhattan earlier this year was selected as the site for the National Bio and Ago Defense Facility.
