Kan. audit: Teachers' hall lost $251K in 3 years

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- An audit in Kansas shows that the National Teachers Hall of Fame lost nearly $251,000 from 2006 through 2008.

The audit, released Thursday by the Kansas Board of Regents, says the hall owes Emporia State University about $200,000 for salaries and expenses the university has covered.

The regents oversee the state's higher education system, and the hall is housed on the Emporia State campus. It moved there in 2006 because of budget problems.

The audit noted the hall has lost major donors in recent years. Its revenues, almost entirely donations, dropped from about $160,000 in 2006 to less than $28,000 in 2008.

A committee hopes to find a major sponsor for the hall and sell its former home to raise money.
