Amtrak passenger found dead on Kan. train tracks

Eds: APNewsNow.

FLORENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of an Amtrak passenger who somehow got off a moving locomotive in central Kansas.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said Wednesday that the incident happened between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Tuesday. Someone on a passing freight train spotted the man around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday along the tracks in the Marion County town of Florence.

The man had been a passenger on Amtrak's eastbound Southwest Chief. It wasn't clear how he left the train. His name wasn't immediately released.

Magliari said "no malfunction" was found on the train. He said Amtrak is assisting with the investigation.
