Lucy C. Hertel, 83, Hays, died Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse.

She was born July 4, 1932, in Seguin to Matt and Anna (Mertes) Lietz. She was raised on a farm southeast of Menlo and attended grade school in Menlo. She later moved to Hays and lived in the dorm and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1950. As a student, she worked in the lab at St. Anthony Hospital.

She married Albinus F. Hertel on November 6, 1950, in Hays. She worked at Fort Hays State University in the Memorial Union, and as a secretary of the St. Joseph religious education program. She later became the full-time bookkeeper for the family owned Hertel Tank Service Inc.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella Circle.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Parkview Care Center, Osborne; three sons, David and wife, Virginia, Michael and wife, Lori, and John and wife, Laura, all of Hays; a daughter, Kathy and Patrick, Eastvale, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Pat Lietz, Wichita, and Aletha Hertel, Hays; eight grandchildren, Christina Hertel, Arvada, Colo., Lisa Hertel, Wheat Ridge, Colo., Michelle Schlyer, Craig, Marc, Jill, Brett and Tara Hertel, all of Hays; five great-grandchildren, Spencer Hertel-Kadota, Arvada, and Jenna and Paige Schlyer, Sophie and Mya Hertel, all of Hays; and a step-great-grandson, Reese Owens, Russell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Leo, Albert and Gilbert Lietz.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays, KS 67601.

A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6 p.m. Monday, followed by a vigil at 6:30 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in care of the funeral home.
