For the first time since 2008, the Hays Larks are the Jayhawk League champions.
Hays clinched the crown Saturday with a 5-1 victory against Derby at Larks Park.
Ryan Busboom hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give Hays a 2-0 lead, and Hays posted two more runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Then, Tito Andino put the finishing touches on the win with a solo homer in the eighth.
MacKenzie Handel finished 2 for 5 with a run scored, while Andino was 2 for 4. Todd Reller, in his first start at catcher, was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Hays posted 10 hits on the night.
Blake Johnston pitched 5.1 innings, and Brett Macari pitched 2.2, while Colton Reavis closed the door on Derby in the ninth for his seventh save of the summer.
The win is the 10th in a row for the Larks, the longest since Hays won 13 straight in 2003.
Hays is 28-10 overall and 22-10 in league play, while Dodge City remains 2.5 games back in the Jayhawk race.
Derby and Hays wrap up the three-game series today at 7 p.m. at Larks Park, then the Larks are scheduled to face Dodge City in a 7 p.m. game Wednesday.
