The Hays Parks Department this week will begin closing restroom facilities and turning off water fountains at all municipal parks.

Because the facilities are not heated, it is necessary to drain all pipes as cold weather approaches to prevent them from freezing and bursting, said Parks Director Jeff Boyle.

Forecasts call for overnight lows to dip into the 20s Friday and Saturday nights, so the city believes it is necessary to shut down restrooms and fountains at this time.

Boyle said the city apologizes for any inconvenience, but can't afford costly repairs that could result from freezing pipes.
