LENEXA – Izabel Schmidt capped a record-breaking freshman season for the Hays High swim team with a pair of medals Saturday at the Class 5-1A State Championships. In her first event, Schmidt finished seventh in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.11 seconds.
EMPORIA – The Hays High track and field team qualified 12 boys and seven girls for this week’s Class 5A State Championships at Friday’s regional. The Indian boys repeated as regional champions with 109 points; Great Bend was runner-up with 71. The HHS girls finished third with 60 ½ points, behind Great Bend, 151 ½, and Salina Central, 86.
TOPEKA – The ninth-seeded Hays High baseball team won a nail-biter to win Tuesday’s semifinal of its Class 5A regional to meet No. 1 seed Topeka-Seaman in the title game, with a berth at state on the line.
The Hays High girls’ soccer team advanced in the Class 5A playoffs on Tuesday, shutting out Emporia 2-0 at HHS field. HHS (13-3) moves on to play at Andover (14-3) at 6 p.m.
NEW ORLEANS - Both Fort Hays State track and field teams wrapped up the 2022 outdoor season ranked in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Ratings Index, released Tuesday (May 17) by the coaches organization. The women are slotted 14th heading into the postseason, while the men are 24th in the latest release.
The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ soccer team saw its season come to end on Tuesday at Cripplegate Field, losing 2-0 to Wichita-Collegiate in the first round of its Class 4-1A regional. Collegiate scored in the 30th and 36th minutes to take a 2-0 halftime lead.
