Broad range of agricultural topics discussed at FHSU forum

With an eye to the critical role agriculture plays in the lives of Kansans, Dr. Grady Dixon, dean of the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics, and Ken Rahjes, Kansas District 110 representative, launched a pilot agricultural forum. The event, held Monday in the FHSU Robbins Center, was funded by Fort Hays State University as part of its mission to serve Kansas residents.

Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Readers, The days of not even whispering the word Christmas until after the pumpkin pie was served are long gone. Cornucopias, pumpkins and other Thanksgiving décor may be front and center now, but Christmas trees and twinkly lights replaced Trick-Or-Treater’s glow sticks in store aisles long before October 31st. The mingling of celebrations rubs some traditionalists the wrong way but their resistance often dissipates when faced by good cheer. Or their naysaying is simply overrun by logistics, the game of TWISTER we all must play these days just dealing with “life” , let alone celebrate a holiday.

Teaching kids about giving

On the quest to raising good humans, I realize that most people tend to use the holidays as a teachable time for kids. We encourage the need to do good for others who might have less than we do as we donate food, toys, money and help in our communities and beyond. We do this on overdrive in November and December because these months are within the “season of giving.” And while I wish this was more of a year-round notion; I still jump on board with my own three kids to embrace the season as a time to do for others with no expectation of gain. Many of the best ways to help others costs nothing at all, aside from some time and effort.
