Fort Hays State University is a regional public university with a global reach. In the academic year 2023, our enrollment served 16,922 students, including 11,715 students from the United States, with 8,000 of these U.S. students hailing from Kansas. This means that more than 68 percent of our U.S.-based students are Kansans. The 8,000 Kansans served included more than 5,000 students from western Kansas and more than 2,000 from Ellis County.
The Ellis County Ministerial Alliance (ECMA) will be opening up a cold weather shelter this fall to house the homeless and travelers stranded in Hays when the temperatures dip to 20 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. This will be the first time Ellis County has had any type of cold weather shelter.

Fort Hays State junior forward Montserrat Diaz was selected to the 2024 Costa Rica national team assembled for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, set to begin in late August in Columbia. Diaz has played 39 matches over two seasons at FHSU, helping the Tigers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
