County Commissioners approved on Sept. 3, 2024 the purchase of 13 sets of wildland firefighting gear, estimated to cost $10,161, with $4,999 of the purchase defrayed by the recent award of a Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant through the Kansas Forest Service.
Fort Hays State played to a 1-1 draw in its season-opening match with CSU-Pueblo on Thursday evening (Sept. 5) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Tigers took the lead in the 61st minute on a brilliant strike from Emily Hutchings but saw the Thunderwolves equalize the game in the 85th minute to force the draw.
Fort Hays State moved into the D2Football.com Top 25 rankings on Monday (Sept. 2) after its season-opening 21-7 win over Angelo State last week. It's Fort Hays State's first appearance in the D2Football.com Top 25 since the 2019 season.
The Hays Public Library has hired Ashlyn Sager for the position of Early Literacy Coordinator. Sager will be tasked with organizing and leading Storytimes, working with daycares and preschools, and overseeing the early literacy area.

In pool play, Hays High got the best of TMP after dropping their first set 25-22. The Indians earned the opening round 2-1 victory, defeating the Monarchs 25-16 in the following two sets. After both teams earned a spot in the winner's bracket, they met back up in the third-place match, where TMP earned their revenge in a pair of 25-23 wins.
It was better late than never for the Fort Hays State University football team.
On Aug. 20, 2024, Ellis County Commissions by consensus authorized Chair Nathan Leiker to send a letter on behalf of the County in support of the Ellis County Amateur Radio Operator’s application for a grant to upgrade its system from an analog to digital system.
