Volga German Sesquicentennial Committee seeks heritage submissions

The Volga German Sesquicentennial Action Committee is calling on the community to help preserve Ellis County’s rich Volga German heritage by submitting historical photographs, documents and personal stories for a forthcoming 2026 commemorative publication. The committee is gathering high-quality images and narratives that showcase all aspects of Volga German immigrant life, from the settlers’ arrival in the 1870s to the present day.

County Commission to meet again in City Hall Sept 2, in City Adm Center Basement Sept 9

According to Ellis County Administrator Darin Myers, the restoration of the County Administrative Center Basement is progressing. However, the County Commission’s September 2, 2025 Meeting will held again in the City Commission Chambers (1507 Main Street) because the hanging of sheetrock began on August 25, 2025 and is expected to continue for several weeks.

Mackay presents subdivision/development road assessment, ranks priority for Leiker/Prairie View & Prairie Acres "High"

On August 19, 2025, Ellis County Commissioners reviewed Public Works (PW) Director Brendan Mackay’s compilation of road data for 21 individualized subdivisions/developments. Mackay’s report included road types, issues and recommended fixes.

Heartland Community Foundation grants nearly $700,000 back into local communities in record-breaking fiscal year

The Heartland Community Foundation granted a record $691,954.80 to local nonprofits and community organizations during its fiscal year from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. This is the largest annual distribution in the foundation’s history — nearly $265,000 more than last year’s $426,339.10.
