WICHITA - The 15th annual Arkansas River Trash Roundup is schedule for Saturday along the downtown river. Registration for volunteers begins 8:30 a.m. at 151 N. Waco in the parking lot north of the Drury Hotel on the southwest corner of Waco and North 1st Street.

“The river trash roundup involves volunteers from across the region, benefitting the Arkansas River, wildlife that calls the river home, conservation education and environmental reclamation, all during a three-hour, fun-filled effort,” said Mayor Jeff Longwell. Since the inception of the event 14 years ago, Longwell added, more than 23 tons of trash has been collected. In 2015, the event attracted a record 855 volunteers.

The event also raises funds for a Wichita Ducks Unlimited project involving the renovation of a wetlands area at the Great Plains Nature Center. Serving as one of the city’s largest Earth Day event, the Arkansas River Trash Roundup has generated approximately $85,000 for Wichita Ducks Unlimited. Wichita Ducks Unlimited will use proceeds raised from the river cleanup to help underwrite a wetland restoration project at the Great Plains Nature Center.

The goal for 2016 is to sign up 900 volunteers – up from 855 in 2015 – and to collect more than three tons of trash. T-shirts will be provided to volunteers while supplies last, and lunch will be served including grilled burgers from Cargill, hot dogs, chips, cookies and beverages.

Please register in order to receive a free T-shirt (while supplies last), trash bags, gloves, and grabbers between 8:30 am and 9:00 am at First Street and Waco. Free transportation will be provided from the registration site to the river for the cleanup activities. After the cleanup starting at 11 a.m., a free lunch will be served including grilled burgers from Cargill, hot dogs, chips, cookies and beverages.
