Financial reports for the month of May are in, and the City of Hays has seen a monthly sales tax increase for the first time in four months.

Eight of the last 12 months had experienced a significant decrease in sales tax receipts, which was concerning for the city, as its general fund depends on sales tax revenues.

City officials expressed hope this increase of approximately $11,700 could mark the beginning of an upward trend.

“That’s good news,” Mayor Eber Phelps said. “Hopefully that continues.”

Year-to-date city general fund collections are down about 3.8 percent compared to the same time last year.
