The Hays High School baseball team split it season-opening doubleheader Thursday against Wichita/Kapaun Mt. Carmel at Indian Field.

Hays High had a 2-0 lead, but fell 3-2 in the opener as Kapaun (1-1) scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the top of the seventh inning.

Then, in Game 2, Hays High (1-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and led 7-1, but held on for a 7-5 win.

Layne Downing (0-1) suffered the Game 1 loss for Hays High, while Marcus Altman (1-0) grabbed the win in Game 2.

Kade Parker had a good day offensively for Hays High. He finished 2 for 3 in each game and scored two runs in the doubleheader. Connor Rule had three RBis and a double in the nightcap.

Hays High is at home again next Thursday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Pratt.
