Helen L. Appel, 83, rural Rush Center, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born June 22, 1930, in Hargrave to Jacob and Mollie (Ickes) Reifschneider. She was a 1948 graduate of La Crosse High School.

She married Delmer D. "Bud" Appel on Nov. 18, 1948, in La Crosse. He preceded her in death Feb. 10, 2007. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Richard Appel and wife, Denise, Rush Center; a daughter, Laura Cox and husband, Steve, Abilene; a brother, LeRoy Reifschneider and wife, Marie, La Crosse; two grandchildren, Kevin Appel and wife, Nicole, and Denise Shuey and husband, Josh; five great-grandchildren, Levi and Lyssa Shuey, Ashlynn and Jayden Basgall, and Kolton Appel; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Henry, Edward and Harold Reifschneider; and five sisters: Marie Reifschneider, Katie McMillan, Mollie Bott, Ida Crotinger and Esther Murray.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, La Crosse; burial in La Crosse City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, and from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Levi Shuey Medical Fund in care of Farmers Bank and Trust, Great Bend.
