It didn't take Sarah Wasinger long to get comfortable in her new position as assistant to the Hays USD 489 superintendent.

Wasinger, 31, is a Hays native who attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Kennedy Middle School and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.

She earned a business management degree and leadership certificate at Fort Hays State University.

Before coming to the school district, Wasinger worked at Radio Shack, first as district training store manager and later as store manager.

"In business management, you learn how to organize, take charge and lead people, Wasinger said. "I get to assist Dean (Superintendent Katt), the board and administration with their daily tasks. I really enjoy doing that, and the organization that I was taught at Fort Hays, and that I gained from Radio Shack are something that I get to use every day."

In addition to assisting Katt, Wasinger prepares board meeting materials, takes the minutes of board meetings and serves as the school district's public information officer.

She and her husband, Joel, live on Joel's family farm and are building a house there.

"I'm an outdoors girl, a tom boy who likes sports and animals," she said.

Wasinger is looking forward to the future of the district.

"I love coming to work," she said. "It's very exciting working for the school district."
