The Fort Hays State University menís golf team struggled in its first competition of the fall, placing 11th at the Missouri Southern State Invitational at Shangri-La Golf Club in Monkey Island, Okla.

In the 11-team, three-day tournament, the Tigers finished with a final score of 999. Central Missouri won the tournament with an 864, followed by Missouri Southern at 887 and Central Oklahoma at 891.

Leading the way for the Tigers was junior Lane Pauls, who came in with a 54-hole total of 243 with rounds of 78, 85, and 80. Behind Pauls was junior Landon Fox, who finished with a score of 244 after rounds of 86, 80, and 78. Junior Koby Beougher was one back of Fox with 245 and also had the lowest score among Tigers in the tournament with a second-round 77. He also added rounds of 78 and 90.

Cash Hobson, a freshman from Hays High, finished 64th overall with rounds of 91, 86, and 93, while sophomore Kade Megaffin was 65th with rounds of 88, 91, and 98.

At the Northeastern State Womenís Golf Classic, the womenís golf team finished 15th of 18 teams, despite a nine-stroke improvement on day two at Cherokee Springs Golf Course in Tahlequah, Okla.

Freshman Kylie McCarthy emerged as the top golfer for FHSU with two rounds of 85, tied for 57th. Freshman Hannah Perkins was one stroke back of her, tying for 61st with a 171 total with rounds of 83 and 88. Freshman Kelsey McCarthy was one back of Perkins with a 172, shooting rounds of 89 and 83 to tie for 63rd.

Freshman Hannah Karasiuk, who led the Tigers after day one with an 82, struggled on Tuesday and tied for 69th overall. Freshman Bailey Jones improved six strokes from day one, shooting 95 after a 101 for a 93rd finish overall. The all-freshman Tigers shot 687 as a team in their second tournament of the season.

Oklahoma Christian won the tournament at 615, while Rogers State was two strokes back at 617. Tournament host Northeastern State finished third with 619.

The men head to Bartlesville, Okla., on Sept. 21 for the NSU Menís Golf Classic. The women return to action Sept. 28-29 at the MIAA Fall Preview in Jefferson City, Mo., at the Jefferson City Country Club.
