Steven D. Powell, 86, Hays, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 18, 1927, in Topeka to George S. and Gladys (Davis) Powell. He was a 1945 graduate of Highland Park High School and a 1951 graduate of Washburn University with bachelor's degrees in math and history.

He married Mary J. "Jackie" Raine on Dec. 14, 1951, in Topeka. He was a carpenter and worked for ISO as a fire insurance inspector. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving at the end of World War II.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays, Hays Optimist Club and Hays Jaycees. He was involved with many church groups and was a past 4-H leader.

He enjoyed photography, making videos, his dogs, camping and traveling, Colorado, and spending time with family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays; three daughters, Sherri Gates and husband, Bob, Loveland, Colo., Kristy Sigle, Wichita, and Robyn L. Powell and friend, Al Lewis, Park City; a brother, George W. Powell and wife, Sally, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Steven Sigle.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Hays; inurnment at 2 p.m. in Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney, with military honors by the Hays VFW.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, and from 10:30 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Humane Society of the High Plains or First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
