Francis E. "Zip" Zimmerman, 76, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at his home in King George, Va.
He was born April 30, 1938, in Hays to William F. and Loretta (Weaver) Zimmerman. He was a 1956 graduate of Hays High School.
He worked for the U.S. government civil service from 1978 for over 20 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired after 20 years.
He was an accomplished photographer in the Navy and U.S. government. He is noted for many documentaries in the U.S. Navy libraries, served with the Taiwan Defense Command, USS Yorktown, Combat Camera Group, Naval Photographic Center, and the White House Press, and served on several of the Navy's aircraft carriers and ships. He was a Vietnam veteran serving three tours in the Vietnam War. Some of his accomplishments were serving as the official U.S. Navy photographer for the Apollo 8 splashdown, and serving President's Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford as a personal White House Press photographer, traveling to historical summits, treaties, and countries with the presidents and their dignitaries.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Zimmerman; four sons, Doug Zimmerman, Larry Zimmerman, Gary Zimmerman and wife, Lili, and Justin Zimmerman and wife, Amy; a daughter, Vicki Zimmerman; two stepdaughters, Karen Rochelle, Kimberly Chester and husband, Steve; and two sisters, Darlene Herbel and Tammy Dreiling; 17 grandchildren, Joseph, Crystal, Jillian Ackerman; Christine, Christian, Joshua Zimmerman; Jake, Ryan Zimmerman; Cecelia, Angelica, Larry Jr., JJ Zimmerman; Nicholas, Kristen, Cameron Rochelle; Greg Kleinschmidt; and Kelsey Hartzfeld; three great-grandchildren, Brayden and Kyla Ackerman and Gregory Kleinschmidt; and 15 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Virgil, Charles, and Ernest (Porky); and a stepson, Bill.
He is laying at rest at Raymond Funeral Service, La Plata, Md. until pending funeral date in Arlington National Cemetery to be announced.
