Downtown Hays Development Corp. is only a few days away from its most necessary and beneficial community event of the year.

The 6th annual Wines and Steins is set to take place at 6 p.m. Friday in the downtown district.

“There is a huge difference between downtown events and our fundraiser,” said Sara Bloom, DHDC executive director. “This is the only one we really make any money off of.”

DHDC plans and hosts numerous events throughout the year, but Bloom said the corporation is lucky to break even on those.

“This is a big deal for us,” she said. “We do get funded partially through the city of Hays, but the rest of our funding comes from Wines and Steins.”

Many downtown businesses take part in the fundraiser, providing participants the opportunity to stroll through the area and stop in while indulging in hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer of their choice.

A few of the newer participating businesses are Refine, Paint the Towne and Turquoise Ranch.

“We enjoy getting involved in downtown events so people know where to find us and what we offer,” said Alaina Long, manager at Refine. “We’re really trying to make a name for ourselves downtown.”

Long said Refine will offer Wines and Steins visitors beer from Defiance Brewing Co., wine and barbecue from Smokin Co.

Upon arrival, guests will receive their choice of either a wine glass or a stein to take with them on the downtown tour. They also will receive a stroll packet, which will show the various stops and what is being served, along with live and silent auction items available.

“We have 16 different stops,” Bloom said. “At each stop, they will get their choice of beverage with an hors d’oeuvre that compliments that beverage.”

During strolling hours, there will be a silent auction, and a live auction will follow later in the night.

“People can expect gorgeous decorations, floral arrangements and a lot of really great products,” Bloom said. “There will be live music, too, during this showcase of our downtown.”
