CANYON, Texas — For the second time this season, the No. 24 Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team used extra time to beat West Texas A&M.

Luan Silva scored the winning goal in FHSU’s 3-2 extra time win over the Buffaloes on Sept. 22.

Senior midfielder David Lucio was Saturday’s hero in Texas, scoring in the 102nd minute on an assist from Mauricio Castorino. Lucio’s header was his third goal of the season, as the Tigers moved to 10-3-1 with the 2-1 win.

The regional opponents played a scoreless first half. FHSU sophomore Maurizio Costa scored the opening goal of the game, beating the West Texas A&M keeper in the 55th minute. Castorino also set up the Tigers’ first goal.

The Buffaloes’ knotted the game at one nearly 13 minutes later.

Neither side scored in the remaining 23 minutes or the first period of extra time. Costa’s goal ended the game early in the second period, preventing a possible tie.

The Tigers and Buffaloes each recorded 14 shots, but FHSU put seven on goal to West Texas A&M’s four.

Michael Yantz made three saves in goal for FHSU.

The Tigers return to MIAA play Friday at Southwest Baptist before playing at Northeastern State on Sunday.
