William R. “Bill” Lovitt, 78, Ransom, died Monday, June 20, 2016, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

He was born Sept. 19, 1937, in McCracken to Robert and Grace Lovitt. He married Sharon Struthers, Rozel, on Aug. 9, 1957.

He graduated from McCracken High School in 1955, where he played football and was a standout basketball player. He graduated from Hutchinson Community College in 1957, where he was a starter on the basketball team.

His love for baseball was embodied as both a player and later as a coach. Playing days were spent with the McCracken Boosters, Ness City Towners and Loretto Blue Jays, as well as with the Hays Larks. A coach for 18 years, he led and mentored numerous young men for the Post 382 American Legion baseball team. For many years he and Sharon owned and operated Lovitt’s Propane and Appliance, Ransom, while he farmed in Rush and Ness counties. He loved spending time with family and friends, hunting, and being on his land.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Kathy Hurd and husband, Jeff, Minneapolis, Minn., Jennifer Lovitt and Teresa Lovitt, both of Dodge City, and Lora Faiman and husband, Scott, of Columbia, Mo.; a son, Brad Lovitt and wife, Lori, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister, Shirley Higgins, McCracken.; and five grandchildren, Rae Faiman, Clay Faiman, Eric Hurd, Austin Hurd and Audra Hurd.

A rosary will be 6 p.m. Sunday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, McCracken. Burial in McCracken City Cemetery.
