Special to The Hays Daily News

At 8:23 p.m. Wednesday, the Hays Fire Department, assisted by the Hays Police Department, responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Law Enforcement Center, 105 W. 12th.

On arrival, firefighters were met by construction workers who reported a small fire on the second floor of the building. The workers reported they had extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Additional firefighters were called as a precaution in case the fire had spread and to assist in removing smoke. Firefighters quickly determined the fire was under control. The most probable cause of the fire was sparks from cutting equipment being used in the construction work.

Four fire trucks and 22 firefighters responded.

The last fire crew left the scene at 9:27 p.m.
