Kenneth P. “Kenny” Mumford, 74, Topeka, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at his home.
He was born Jan. 19, 1941, in Denver, to Robert and Bessie (Hoover) Mumford. He was a 1959 graduate of Topeka High School.
He married Sondra Moss on May 20, 1962. He later married Pat Bardsley on Sept. 18, 2010.
He was a trooper for the Kansas Highway Patrol and was a pilot flying both enforcement aircraft and the executive aircraft. He served six governors while assigned to the Protective Service Detail. He retired in 1995 with the rank of captain after 31 years of service. After retirement, he worked for the Capitol Police for 12 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran for four years.
He enjoyed building classic cars.
Survivors include a son, Todd Mumford; two daughters, Teri Schmidt and husband, Stan, and Kammie Campagna and husband, John; a brother, Larry Mumford; a sister, Mary Brooks; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a friend of many years, Jack Benge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Bud Brooks; and two sisters-in-law, Janice and Marilyn Mumford.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka; inurnment in Topeka Cemetery.
Family will greet friends an hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Helping Hands Humane Society or Highland Heights Christian Church in care of the funeral chapel.
